In the midst of Delhi’s hustle and bustle, traffic-honking calamity, and dusty streets is an oasis towering above it all. Across the street from one of the city’s newer metro lines is the Hilton Janakpuri, the first Hilton property in India, and a welcome respite for business travelers and international tourists from all corners of the globe.
Entering the lobby sends necks craning high thanks to an extraordinary canary yellow and azure glass chandelier that descends from the almost four-story high ceiling. Directly underneath is the circular reception desk, the only one of its kind in India. A sofa lines the back radius of the circle where guests may relax.
Guests with reservations on the executive club level need not linger here as they can complete registration in the club lounge on the ninth floor, which is where I was directed. Whereas in the U.S. and many other countries, a single staffer attends to an arrival, India handles these matters differently. It appeared as if each guest was appointed a personal entourage. Someone took my bags, another brought me a drink, and another handled my key. Yet another showed me to my room, and this is standard practice.
THE ROOM
Bunking on the executive level is part of being a Hilton HHonors Diamond member, and this hotel does an excellent job of taking care of its premium loyalty guests (both HHonors Gold and Diamond). My door opened with an electronic key and quickly revealed a living and sleeping area. Clearly, I had been upgraded, but peeking into other rooms showed me that all rooms had similarly modern décor that was pleasant and attractive.
The bedding at this hotel is the signature Hilton standard with thick duvets and overstuffed pillows. Bathrooms boast the new standard of Peter Thomas Roth toiletries, which have won acclaim for their quick-drying hand lotion and massaging soap bars. My room had a glass shower stall packed with even more PTR toiletries than the soaking tubs had (although the latter had a massaging rubber toy as well).
All rooms featured amenities such as full-length mirrors, safes, robes, coffeemakers, and spacious closet areas.
During the evening hours, guests on the executive level enjoy exclusive access to the popular lobby bar that overlooks the neighboring shopping center. Elite member and club level guests are invited to a complimentary happy hour with hot snacks in this more happening space than the rather cocooned club lounge. This space is situated within the hotel’s restaurant area, which may make it convenient for corporate guests making deals during the evening hours over a meal.
ROAD WARRIOR SUPPORT
Since I spent a big chunk of my time in my room doing work, I made use of the glass-topped desk to use the speedy high-speed Internet to check my e-mail and do work.
The non-ergonomic chair mated to the desk was comfortable and easy to maneuver to my desired height.
Downstairs, ample meeting space including large ballrooms equipped to handle groups of any size is part and parcel of the hotel’s big draw for business travelers. Apart from the grand ballroom, which can be divided into three smaller spaces, there are four additional function rooms. Formal deals can be sealed in the boardroom. All public spaces are equipped with Wi-Fi.
